A completed checklist is preparation, not confirmation of eligibility or a recommendation to roll over funds.
Start by identifying whether this is a former or current employer’s 401(k). Request the applicable distribution rules. An in-service distribution depends on the plan and law; availability should be confirmed before opening a receiving account for a planned rollover.
Write down the current plan’s costs, investment choices, withdrawal features, and services. Compare those with the proposed self-directed IRA, including metal premiums and recurring charges. An available rollover is not by itself a reason to leave the plan.
In a direct rollover, the plan pays the receiving retirement account, using that institution’s exact payee and delivery instructions. A check payable to the receiving account is different from a check payable to you. A taxable eligible plan distribution paid to you generally has mandatory withholding and a 60-day rollover deadline; rolling over the gross amount can require replacing the withheld money from other funds. Confirm the route before requesting payment. Keep account numbers in the institutions’ secure channels, not this website’s request form.
Keep a simple record with the request date, sending-plan reference, contact person, amount expected, and date received. Ask for an estimate specific to your plan rather than relying on a universal completion time. Resolve a missing or mismatched amount before authorizing a purchase.
Once funding is confirmed, review the exact gold or silver products and the written total price. Ask the custodian about IRA acceptance and the selected depository arrangement. Keep the signed directions, dealer invoice, and receipt confirmation together.
An eligible 401(k)-to-IRA rollover completed under the applicable rules can preserve tax deferral. First confirm that your plan permits the distribution, that it is rollover-eligible and that the receiving custodian accepts it. A permitted withdrawal is not always eligible for rollover: hardship payments and required minimum distributions are examples to flag. This is not a blanket tax-free promise; moving pre-tax money to a Roth IRA can create taxable income. Have the institutions and a qualified tax professional review your account before money moves.

Write down each institution’s contact person, the documents requested, the date instructions were accepted and the next action. Ask who will confirm receipt in the IRA. If a request stalls, that record helps you ask a specific question without submitting a second distribution request or relying on a generic processing-time promise.
Start with the institution responsible for the answer, and keep its instructions together. A metals quote does not establish whether the sending account is eligible.
Ask the sending institution and receiving custodian to confirm their own steps. Record the next observable event and responsible contact before requesting another action. Use their secure channels for account information.
A trustee-to-trustee transfer moves assets directly between IRAs. A direct rollover moves an eligible distribution from an employer plan to a receiving retirement account. A distribution paid to you personally is a different route with redeposit rules. The IRA once-per-12-month rollover limit generally applies to IRA-to-IRA 60-day rollovers, not trustee transfers or plan-to-IRA rollovers. Confirm the sending and receiving tax types separately: direct movement does not make a Roth conversion tax-free.

Start with the account that owns the annuity. An annuity inside an IRA or qualified retirement plan may support an accepted transfer or eligible rollover, subject to the account and contract rules. A personally owned nonqualified annuity is not an eligible retirement-plan rollover source. Cashing it out and later making a regular IRA contribution are separate transactions; contribution eligibility and limits still apply. Even when account movement preserves tax deferral, insurer surrender charges or other contract adjustments may apply. Obtain a net surrender quote and review any benefits you would lose before authorizing a move.

CD maturity is a product event, not automatically a withdrawal from an IRA. For an IRA CD, ask the bank and receiving custodian how to coordinate a trustee-to-trustee transfer while keeping the proceeds in compatible retirement custody. Confirm maturity, automatic renewal and any grace period in the actual agreement. Early exit may carry a bank charge or may not be permitted; that charge is different from tax on an IRA distribution. A CD outside an IRA is not a retirement account, so its proceeds do not become rollover money when it matures. Any regular IRA contribution must separately meet the contribution rules.
